South: beaches between Scarlino and Follonica
Approaching from the south, you’ll find large stretches of public beach that actually fall within the Scarlino area. The pier area, for example, is less crowded during many periods, offering plenty of space for everyone. The beach can be accessed through the gates, along walkways lined with several wooden tables.
In the “Polveriera” area, past the pier and approaching Follonica, you can access the pine forest for shade during the hottest hours of the day. Many choose to enjoy a picnic here, especially at lunchtime.
Entering the Municipality of Follonica, you’ll find several public beaches between one beach resort and another. We’re in the Salciaina neighborhood, and to reach the sea, you also cross a pine forest. On the main road (Collacchie street) and in the surrounding streets, there are hotels, bars, bazaars, pizzerias, and other shops to satisfy your every need.
Senzuno and the houses on the beach
Proceeding north, you’ll encounter the wide beach in front of the “Colonia Marina”, a popular destination for those staying in Cassarello and Salciaina quarters. A little further on, you’ll notice a series of seaside houses, once simple fishermen’s shacks. Behind them is the Levante pine forest, while directly in front is a free beach. You can still use the bars and paid services at the beach resorts surrounding this area, especially in Senzuno quarter.
The Via della Repubblica neighborhood, renovated with the 2025 renovations, offers some free beach areas near the yacht club. Crossing the bridge toward Viale Carducci, you’ll find another free beach area, right next to the mouth of the Gora river. However, be aware that swimming is prohibited right in front of the canal (for information on temporary restrictions, please consult the ordinances on the website of the Municipality of Follonica).
Public beaches in the city center
As you might expect, the central area is packed with beach clubs. However, those looking for free space need not worry: right off the main street of Via Roma and Viale Italia, there are some free-access areas. We recommend arriving early, given the high number of tourists and residents. Convenience is a given here, as ice cream parlors, restaurants, and playgrounds for children are just steps from the beach.
North: clear water and relax
Continuing along Viale Italia, you enter the Pratoranieri quarter, characterized by late-night bars, restaurants, and small villas. A few beach resorts coexist here, but they often give way to long stretches of public beach. Approaching the Swiss Village area, popular with tourists from Northern Europe, you’ll also find the public beach of Ex Tony’s, popular with young people.
In general, the entire stretch from Pratoranieri toward the province of Livorno is known for its clean waters, allowing you to spot fish and other marine life, especially among the rocks.
In the tourist village area, past the sailing club bridge, you’ll find another public beach, also popular with pet owners: the Bau Beach with free access to dogs.
Where to park in Follonica
Finding parking to reach one of Follonica’s public beaches, especially on a summer day, can be challenging.
